Gardening and Growing Information Resources

National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service: National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service is managed by the National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) and is funded under a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture's Rural Business-Cooperative Service. It provides information and other technical assistance to farmers, ranchers, Extension agents, educators, and others involved in sustainable agriculture in the United States. (ATTRA was formerly known as the "Appropriate Technology Transfer for Rural Areas" project.) Of particular interest, a treatise on late blight, (with suggestions for containing it) which has been devastating crops throughout the south this year.

The Rodale Institute: Lots of good information on organic farming.

LSU Ag Center: "The Louisiana State University Agricultural Center, known as the LSU AgCenter , is one of 11 institutions within the Louisiana State University System. The LSU AgCenter's mission is to provide the people of Louisiana with research-based educational information that will improve their lives and economic well-being. The LSU AgCenter includes the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station, which conducts agricultural-based research, and the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service, which extends the knowledge derived from research to the people of the state. The LSU AgCenter plays an integral role in supporting agricultural industries, enhancing the environment, and improving the quality of life through its 4-H youth , family and consumer sciences, and community development programs."

Want to know how to can and freeze foods safely? The LSU Ag Center is the place to look. They have some really great recipes too...among many other how-to resources.

The Arbor Day Foundation: "We Inspire people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees."

New Orleans lost so MANY of our beloved trees in Katrina and Gustav. We're planting, but it will take years to bring back our trees.

Did you know that New Orleans is a Tree City? "These are communities that have made the commitment to invest in their trees. They are fulfilling the four standards set forth by the Tree City USA program and are reaping the benefits ."
